On warnings & ratings

I'm never sure how to rate stories. I dislike the whole concept of ratings, and I don't watch enough movies or TV to have a good sense of how ratings are generally handled. For fanfic, I've seen complaints both at ratings that are too low to warn for material the reader found disturbing and complaints at ratings that are too high for the lack of explicit sex or violence.

So: People in these stories often have sex and suffer or commit violent acts. The sex is not always good, and even when it is, it's probably not described in enough detail to be a huge turn-on.

Some of the stories are sad; some are horrific, though I tend to psychological rather than physical horror. One story is even happy, and may be joined by happy bubbly friends in the future. You never know.

I don't warn for character death or angst, because it might weaken the impact of the story. I don't warn for homoerotic content, because I don't consider it offensive and don't see why I should bow to the prejudices of those who do.

I've put my best-guess rating on the story page, but I can't swear it will be the same as yours.

Still interested? Go read. Then tell me what you think.

Postscript, 2005:

There are a few more happy stories and a few more sexy stories now; some of them are even both at the same time. Happy searching. :)
